EV Charging at Home: What to Know Before You Install
Charging at home is the easiest way to own an electric car. A little planning makes the install simple.
Request an electricianLevel 1 vs Level 2
Level 1 uses a regular outlet and charges slowly. Level 2 uses a 240-volt circuit and is much faster — most owners choose Level 2.
Check your panel
A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated circuit. An electrician will check whether your panel has room. See signs you need a panel upgrade.
Pick the spot
Closer to the panel usually means a simpler install. Make sure the cable reaches the car’s charge port.
Permits and HOAs
The install usually needs a permit. If the charger is outside, check your HOA or deed restrictions.
Rebates
Ask your electricity provider and car maker about charger rebates before you buy.
