Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?

A breaker trips to protect your wiring. Once is normal. Again and again means something needs attention.

Request an electrician

1. Overloaded circuit

Too many things running on one circuit — a space heater, hair dryer and microwave, for example. Move something to another circuit and reset the breaker once.

2. Short circuit

A hot wire touching a neutral or ground wire. Breakers that trip instantly, scorch marks or a burning smell point to a short. Leave the breaker off and call an electrician.

3. Ground fault

Current leaking to ground, often near water. GFCI outlets and breakers trip to prevent shocks. Check for wet outlets outdoors or in the garage.

4. A worn-out breaker

Breakers can wear out. An electrician can test it and replace it if needed.

When to call an electrician

If a breaker trips again right after you reset it, trips with nothing much running, or you notice heat, buzzing or burning smells. See electrical repair.
