Standby vs Portable Generators: Which Is Right for You?
After a big storm, power can be out for days. Here is how the two main types of generator compare.
Request an electricianStandby generators
Installed outside on a pad, run on natural gas or propane, and start automatically when the power goes out. More convenient and more expensive.
Portable generators
Cheaper and flexible, but you have to set them up, fuel them and run them safely outdoors.
Connect it safely
Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. Use a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician. See generator installation.
Carbon monoxide
Run portable generators outdoors only, far from doors, windows and vents, and keep CO alarms working inside.
Plan before storm season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Installs go faster when booked in the spring.
